How difficult is the AP Spanish Language exam?

How to get a 5 on the AP English Language Exam?

  • Im not really an "english person". Im more into math and science but I REALLY need to get a 5, 4 at the lowest, on the AP english language exam. I need any last minute tips, help, advice, ANYTHING. How should I approach the passage based questions? What about the essays?

  • Answer:

Annotating is extremely helpful in approaching any analysis. Basically, all you have to do in your limited time is underline everything that stands out to you as you read. This includes specific words, punctuation, or repetition. That way, when you're writing an essay, you will have evidence and the evidence will be easier to organize (almost with a glance if you get an easy passage or poem). Since the English Language exam should focus a little more on the technicalities of English composition, you might want to pull your notes out to buy an AP prep book. Organize all you know about how people approach different types of writings to certain audiences. With the essays, your ABSOLUTE FIRST GOAL is to get a thesis statement. If you are not very good at writing under pressure or under a time limit, all you need to do is get the thesis statement out and move on. After that, remember to have topic sentences for ALL of your paragraphs. Those are basically thesis statements for the evidence that you are using. And if you really lack confidence, it is actually better to leave out a conclusion rather than write a poor one. I do not recommend leaving out a conclusion simply because you're nervous now, so please practice wrapping up your points. Good luck!

Well, focus on the essays... the MC aren't all that different than the essay writing, just backwards. Remember the three types of essays: Agree, disagree, or qualify: Take a stance on an issue, and argue it. Use evidence from personal experience, history, books you've read, or whatever you can think of to back it up. Rhetorical Analysis: Look at an essay and break down what the writer is trying to prove, and see how he tries to prove it, remember to look at the three means of rhetoric: logic, emotion, and credibility, and figure out where and how the author uses one or more of these ideas, and what affect it has on the reader. Synthesis, using evidence from papers, images, etc. support a claim on an issue. This really requires you to understand WHAT the question is (because often the evidence might lead you to argue something not really relevant to the prompt) and make sure you analyze the evidence as best you can when placing it in, using half of provided + 1 pieces of evidence to support your argument. English III is all about how to argue. Look at arguments, figure out how to break them down, and you should be fine. I got a 5 on mine.
