How To Reward Children?

Reward chart/allowance for children?

  • I am starting a reward chart for my children to teach them responsibility. I came up with 12 things that they can earn chips for. I am using a poker chip system. If they do the things on the list they can earn a total of 62 chips a week. My question in how many chips should they have at the end of the week to earn their $5.00. One chip under and they have to start over next week at the beginning. to teach them savings I am adding 5.00 to every 50.00 they earn!

The problem I see is that children have a tendency to lose things. Why not a chart with gold stars or the like pasted on to show progress each week. Not only is it simpler for younger children to determine how close (or far) they are from the threshold, but if you post it on the fridge or other high-traffic spot, it's a continual reminder for them.

Yikes that is really complicated. Having a reward system in place is good but yours has my eyes crossed. I would simply say you get $5 a week to do these things. If you fail to do one thing on the list then you get $0. If they do extra well you can offer between 50 cents and a buck.

I tried several things for chores. I have to say that all of them worked until the newness wore off. So I rotated them as my child got older. Life has chores he did too. But if you work hard and put forth extra, you earn extra. This was the lesson I tried to teach. 1. I used photos until my child could read. The tickets like at a carnival. But the idea was the same. Together we assigned a point system value to the chore. Harder or more time consuming more point value. If the task was completed w/o flack or reminders, bonus points. (like a raise) Or a deduction in point value if not completed on time or flack given. 2. We together assigned point values in the same way for rewards. Riding bike 1 hour had a value assigned. This value of chores and rewards for my son was like the real world experience. BUT... I took it a step further and assigned a value to MY time. this was an important lesson for my son to realize the value of adult time. He has a sleep over for instance. Extra cooking/supervision/admittance for entertainment. He learned that I had to work extra or put in more time to allow me to reward him (the love of my life). Taught value of other peoples time/energy and math as well. He had his usual everyday stuff but if he wanted something extra, he would search out extra photos/tickets to accomplish to earn the extra. As a pre teen I got more creative and tried to make it fun. I bought 3 arrow spinners. 1 was for hard/time consuming. 1 was for fast/easy and one was random. This system he thought to this day was the most fun. He had to spin from each after school. He chose easy/fast first. (no stress) then hard/time (not so hard to deal with if following easy one. The the random one was the best. Written on each pie section was either a random job, something now normally done like help planting/cleaning gutters/sorting for donation (bonding to me) but there was also a cash reward one as well as a "pass it on" where he could pass on either one of his chores to someone else in the family with no consequences. He loved this the best. I know it's long but remember to change it up now and again so it's always fresh and they don't loose interest.
