How to get boyfriend to still want you after a break?

• The other day we talked about breaking up because of the distance(1 hr) and then he said let's not make any rash decisions and that he didn't want to break up and i said I didn't either. and he said he missed me all sweetly and that he would try more to make me happier. Then a few days later I call him just wanting to chat and he's in a bad mood. And says he still has to wake up. He's always grumpy when he's sleepy. So I told him to call me back & when he did I told him how I didn't like the joke he made. He said I take everything too seriously. Then out of nowhere says we need a break and then we need to break up. And says how he really likes me but it's impossible to have a relationship. Although just the other day he was telling me it would get better in the summer when he's not so busy with school. He even said a few times that I would be the perfect girlfriend if I lived closer. And then I tell him i dont want to but he says he doesnt want to be with me anymore and it's like he's going back and forth between break and break up and I told him I love him not to get him to stay but I didn't know if it was my last chance and he just stayed quiet. He never is quiet on the phone like that. Then he said something about a break not a break up. I said not to date other people he said he wouldn't but I don't know what he wants. How do I get him to stay with me? I do love him. He didn't even clarify how long the break is he said he didn't know and wanted to get off the phone. How do I contact him again? And make him regret this? Please don't say anything negative. Thanks
