Who To Pick For NHL 2012 Draft?

What should the Oilers do in the 2012 NHL draft?

  • Please don't be idiots and say they should pick the best available player. In my opinion you should pick the best player that fits your needs like Ryan Murray because the Oilers need defense. That's what cost them this year was defense and defense wins championships I think they need to pick a defenseman like Ryan Murray. So I think they should trade down and let Yakupov go first overall. I wouldnt be surprised if they kept the first overall pick and used it and did a draft and trade with Yakupov. Do you agree with me on this statement- I have a weird feeling that the Oilers lost games on purpose so they could get another high draft pick. Additional question 1. Which team would you like to see draft Malcolm Subban Additional question 2. If they were to trade down who would they trade with and what extra would they get in return

  • Answer:

I think the Oilers should trade the Yakupov pick and Jordan Eberle to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal and either Paul Martin or Zbynek Michalek. Staal gives the Oilers a solid defensive forward who is capable of putting up 100 points in a season. Martin or Michalek brings veteran defensive presence to a team who needs it BADLY. Yakupov could play on Malkin's right, with Kunitz on the left. Eberle could play on Crosby's right, with Neal on the left. I don't believe the Oilers tanked to get a higher pick... I just believe they weren't very good.

I asked a question a while ago if Murray would go first overall.... most everyone who answered was a dolt and declared Nail to Edmonton for sure, or trade for a lower spot.... neither of those make sense though. A trade for the first pick and moving down a couple spots would likely be a very close trade and would be pointless, as would drafting Yakupov and immediately trading him. It would be stupid for anything but Murray first overall to Edmonton to happen. Subban will go fairly low. Unless a goalie is absolutely outstanding, it is very rare to see him go quick in the draft. Too unpredictable

i agree that they need defense and i agree that they should trade down to get that defense. the Oilers are very top heavy on offensive talent but lack D and goaltending. dubnyk is not the guy to be they're starter. Additional question 1. i could really care less where he goes. he's a goalie we wont hear from him in a few years anyways. Additional question 2. honestly they should trade with the leafs. i dont say this as a fan i just believe the leafs have the most to offer. we got an abundance of young defenseman who could fit in great with edmonton and we have young goalies in scrivens and rynass that can be used to sweeten a deal.

Ryan Murray should go first overall to Edmonton. No one is going to trade up to take Yakupov. Murray is every bit as good a pick as Yakupov plus he fits Edmonton's biggest need right now. It takes two to make a trade and no one is going to give up anything of value to take Yakupov.

Unknown at this point, but.. If the Oilers were smart they would draft Ryan Murray for defence in the near future. They have enough Offence, and as hard as it is to give up Yakupov, they need Murray. Additional 1: Toronto Additional 2: Dunno

Fine, Don't Listen to Me.

I agree they should trade down and just take Murray. While it would be nice to have another offensive piece, they have that top line with Hall, RNH and Eberle and Hemsky is on the second line and while they could shift him to left wing, building up the defense makes more sense. They need an anchor defensemen, Murray is the best available defensemen. He may not pan out as a tp line guy but it's worth a shot when your blue line talent is very thin. AQ1- IDK. AQ2- The Islanders make a great partner. I would have said Toronto, but there's a chance the Isles would snatch up Murray if available at four (which is likely). Dumba wouldn't be a bad consolation prize, but the Isles offer more than the Leafs do. The Islanders do need a guy to put next to Tavares and that would allow them to keep Strome at centre and there's a very good chance Montreal and Columbus take Galchenyuk and Grigorenko. The pick won't get you Tavares but it could fetch you maybe Moulson, Grabner or Niederreiter, one of their defensemen (prob not De Haan), their pick and maybe a second or third.

Trading down is a good idea if I'm being honest. If a team with two first rounders or with enough assets to give up and a need for Yakupov wants to trade up, that should be good enough for Edmonton. But taking Yakupov isn't a bad idea either. To win in the NHL, you need two good scoring lines and good depth behind them. Right now, the Hall-RNH-Eberle line is all Edmonton really has. They still need to add talent, whether that be on defense or as a forward. AQ1: New Jersey, considering it's low enough to be in good draft range, and the fact they haven't found a future replacement for Brodeur yet, because I don't really think Scott Wedgewood is good enough. AQ2: Maybe my Capitals would dangle the two first rounders, the rights to Kuznetsov or Green, and a good prospect like Eakin or Galiev. But more Russians is the opposite of what we need. Another team that may want to inquire about Yakupov is Columbus, trading up one pick to get him. As I've seen in my adventures with the NFL Draft, teams will trade up to get what they want, even if it's only one pick. They need a replacement for Rick Nash, considering I think he's bound for Toronto.
