How to get a 14 month old to nap when your 3 year old won't be quiet EVER?

  • We have a small house so the living room, kitchen and bedrooms are right on top of each other. When my 14 month old lays down I shut his door and turn the bathroom fan on to drown out the noise, but my 3 year old is just loud. He's a kid. I try to get him to be quiet and do things quietly while brother sleeps but it's impossible unless we go outside or I make him go to my room and watch a movie...and I feel bad for making him have to do that, but I really don't have any other choice do I? Is it wrong to make him have "quiet time" while his brother naps? By the way, if my 14 month old doesn't nap then he's very grumpy so he really needs to.

    If it means your 3 year old needs to have quiet time, then so be it. Quiet time won't kill him and it doesn't make you a bad mother. Any mother can understand the need for their child to nap, so if you need to put on a movie for your 3 year old in your room, then do it.

Have you thought about sending the 3 year old to preschool, headstart or a playgroup or whatever is available in your area for part of the day? It would be good for him to get to play with other kids at his age and it will give you a break and some quiet time for the baby to nap.

You can make a chart or something if he's quiet for a week he can stay 10min past his bedtime

We used to read to my oldest when the baby was napping. He looked forward to it, he loved being read to. Even when the baby no longer napped, we still took an hour or so to read every day because my kids liked it. When I was reading was literally the only time that child would ever be quiet throughout the day. He was a screamer the rest of the time.

No, there's nothing wrong with that. Personally, I'd give him some Benadryl or something to knock him out as well so it's not an issue.

Why arent you making your 3 year old take a nap at the same time, hes only 3. I took naps til i was 12 yrs old and i still take naps at 62. Problem solved... both of em take naps at same time...
