How common is b12 deficiency?

Vitamin b12 deficiency in dogs -- please help! (? for vet/medical professional)?

  • Hello! I am wanting to talk to somebody about vitamin b12 deficiency in dogs. I think my 7 y-o boxer might be b12 deficient. I came to this conclusion after being diagnosed with b12 deficiency myself earlier today. Then, after a long walk with the dog, he was panting heavily and having mild dystonic spasms, and I gave him a b12 vitamin (1000 mcg). Within 1 minute he stopped panting. Vitamin b12 deficiency could also help explain some of his other ongoing health problems, such as scaly skin, hair loss, sensitivity to wheat, runny stools, dystonia/seizure-like activity with temp. loss of bladder control, breathing problems, loss of coordination in his back legs...etc. I could go on. Anyway, let me know if you might be able to help me out! Thank you, -Calista

    There are no vets on here, just a few 10-12yo kids who claim to be vets. You need to take your dog to your vet. There could be many things that cause those symptoms.

Cobalamin (Vitamin B12) deficiency usually shows up as a GI issue in dogs. Idiopathic diarrhea is the most common symptom. the other stuff that you mention are not really symptoms of B12 deficiency. The neurological signs are definitely not a common sign. Your dog needs to be assessed and treated by your vet. Below is a good website that covers Cobalamin deficiency. There is a fairly reliable blood test available. Oral B12 doesn't work well in dogs. Injectable B12 will give you the most reliable results if this really is a B12 deficiency.

You need to call or schedule an appointment with your REAL vet. Don't EVER rely on finding a vet here. Granted, there may be a few, and there are some VERY knowledgeable people on here, but if you think your dog has a serious problem, you can never rely on people giving you answers over the internet. Please get your dog checked out by an actual vet as soon as possible.
