How do you format a memory card?

How can i format my memory card and upload the photos without it deleting the photos?

  • All i want to do is get photos off my memory card onto my computer to view. But this message comes up when i connect the USB - "You need to format the disc before you can use it - Do you want to format it?' I have formatted a memory card before and lost all the photos. I am at a loss as to how to see my photos - i don't want them erased! How can this be done? If i click the format button, will my photos be destroyed? Or should i take the risk and it'll be okay?

    Not possible, you need to back up your photos onto a computer or another flash/hard drive such as an external. When you format any type of Drive it will DELETE everything with it PERiOD!! I suggest finding a computer with Windows XP from a friend & see if it allows you to view 7 save your photos without the format messege. If so i suggest backing up your photos that way then take your flash Drive back home & format it with your version of windows.

Backup your photo's to your computer by connecting via your usb cable, once that is done you can then format your memory card. Having said that, I have had the same message come up at times on mine but I have ignored it and still been able to access the photo's on it

you have done it wrong i guess. remove the usb , now try this, insert usb- when list comes up select to open / view with. when open simply drag into your library for example pictures or documents. If still getting the message you describe i guess you have auto open with a program so do not worry ignore the option shown leave it still connected and instead go to your program list - computer- now select the memory card shown as a drive - using right click and - open- now do as said above just drag it accross and can't foresee any probs but yes to your question to format means erase/delete :)
