Should I ask a girl that I like out?

I like this girl in my class but i don't know if I should ask her out?

• Ok so this situation is VERY complicated (in my opinion). I liked her for a while and in the beginning she liked me as well but I had no clue. Also at the time we both had significant others so if we wanted to be together we could not. But while I was with my girl friend at the time she would walk by and give me this look that gave me butterflies. When I would walk past she would blush and we would start talking. Now me being me, I just played it off because I knew she had a boyfriend so I did not think of her flirting. Maybe she was just being friendly. But I found out later (from a mutual friend) that she liked me a lot and as time went past I missed my opportunity. So we kept talking to each other and we both told each other how we felt and that was it. From that moment we became closer to each other to the point where we are comfortable to touch each other. Not in a Extreme way like fondling with her boobs or groping her, just maybe a slap on the butt here or she may rub my ears stuff like that. I have her number and we rarely text each other but when we do it is short and to the point. Now that we are both single I want to ask her but the mutual friend told me that the girl i like likes me but she wants us to stay friends. Which I didn't understand because why like someone if you don't want them for yourself (again just my opinion). So I believed her but I didn't take it to seriously. I don't want to end what I have with her now but I do want to go farther. I don't want to ask her over text because that just don't seem like I mean it. I know if she says no it wont be a big deal but, I just can't get my mind off of her. P.S. The mutual friend and the girl I like are best friends. Its like they are sisters and they tell each other everything and I kinda have some history with the mutual friend. P.P.S. To answer any unasked questions: -Yes we do talk a lot in school -I am a complete gentleman to her. -Sometimes when I text her she doesn't text me back -In class we flirt more than pay attention in class -Every time we walk past each other she initiates the "hello" and smiles when she sees me -She gives me kisses on the cheek (if that helps/means anything) -We exchanged valentines day presents -We hold hands when we walk in the hallway (sometimes) -I am in High school -I am only 16 A girls/women's POV would be greatly appreciated!

  I wouldn't disregard what the friend said. But doesn't mean you shouldn't try!! Ask her on a date first and then just find out from her. And if she says she doesn't want to mess up the friendship at least you have the answer from her and can have it resolved.
