How To Make A Dress?

How can I convince my mom not to make me wear a cover-up with my prom dress?

• My senior prom is this Saturday and my mom is very strict about me dressing appropriately. The dress I bought was the most appropriate one I could find. It's a one shoulder dress with no cleavage whatsoever. It's also very long. My mom is making me wear a small black jacket type thing over it. I hate it because first, the jacket is too big and makes me look fat. Second, it does not match the dress at all and covers up the beaded detailing on it. And third, I'm gonna be the only one in such a cover-up in my prom group and in my pictures. For once, I'd like to be able to look nice without having my mom ruin it. I understand that she wants me to dress modestly but my dress is modest and I'm almost 18 and I feel like its time she stopped treating me like a child. I would tell her all of this but I'm afraid she's going to get very angry at me and not let me go to my prom anymore. I would take the jacket off at prom but I'd still need it in all pictures she might see and anyway I'd rather not go behind her back. How can I convince her not to make me wear it? Whenever I bring it up she accuses me of trying to be too ''American'' and how we're not like people from here. It's really annoying. I've lived here since I was 5.

  Ask if you can find something a bit less bulky like a scarf or a shawl or bandelero jacket. You will have to just tell her that you are really unhappy with the way theat the jacket looks, but that you do respect her wishes and would really like to compromise.
