What is Video Based DVD?

VGA vs S-Video when playing DVD on projector. Which is better?

  • I can connect S-Video to my standard definition projector (800 x 600) via a DVD player, or I can connect my laptop to my projector via a VGA cable. What will be better for playing DVDs? My guess would be the laptop, based on the configuration I have mentioned above, due to the fact the DVD will be playing in its native component format and not converted to S-Video in the DVD player before being displayed on the projector? By the way, I have tested it out and cannot see a difference really. I just want to know what format the laptop makes the DVD play in, such as whether it is its native component format. Cheers.

  • Answer:

VGA is better, however you won't see much of a difference. The reason is that standard DVD discs/movies are 480i (480x720) it's not even progressive at least in NTSC regions, lots of people still give out bad info here stating that DVD is 480p. So, s-video and VGA, neither one is going to have issues with standard def material. And I doubt you will be able to see much difference between the two. If you had some kind of HD material, then the connection becomes more important and visibly different.
