U.S. Army: How do you specialize your MOS from 68W to 68WF3?
-
i'm currently in DEP for active duty in the u.s. army. my MOS is 68W (health care specialist) and i plan to specialize to F3 (flight paramedic). my recruiter told me that i can apply during AIT so that i can go straight to school to specialize instead of having to apply once i'm at my permanent duty station and wait all that time to transfer. i'd like to go directly from AIT to specialize my MOS. i'm a little confused, how do i begin the application, where do i start, and who do i ask/tell? i believe that the class is 6 weeks in ft. rucker, alabama at the school of aviation medicine. what is the process of applying, and what qualifications must one have to do so? my main goal after specialization is to make E-5 then apply for WOFT to hopefully become a MEDEVAC pilot and i feel that the F3 specialization would better qualify me, so i am familiar with working on one and i can also decide if becoming a warrant officer is what i want to do. please no links, i need a clear answer preferably from someone who knows about this topic! thanks.

Answer:
You cannot apply during AIT. You must have completed all 68W training requirements, and have been stationed at you permanent duty station. You must be at least an E-3 to apply for this course. Your commander must approve your request! And give you a recommendation. To complete a packet, you will need; A copy of your Enlisted Record Brief (ERB), DA Form 705 (APFT), DA 4186 (Medical Recommendation for Flight Duty), Copy of current NREMT-B and BLS card DA Form 7442 ( Table VIII verification) and DA Form 4187 (Request for Personnel Action). Once you have all of these documents, you will submit them to your unit S1 (this is the part of your unit that handles administrative Pperwork) and they will forward your Packet to the United States Army School of Aviation Medicine (USAAM). In summary, you won't apply for this course into, after you've completed 68W training, and you have been at your duty station for some time. Additionally, as a matter of experience, I can tell you that Flight Medic is a highly contested job field. You will be competing against medics who have been in The Army 5+ years, are likely NCO's and who have deployed 2+ times. Most commanders give their approval to go this school as an award iin many cases. Just want you to be realistic, andunderstand that you will likely be in the army for a few years, before this opportunity actually presents itself to you.

As a new Soldier you don't. Your recruiter is clueless about how the medical MOSs work. You have to be a medic with one year minimum experience, ambulance or ground unit is preferred. For women 68Ws this would be with an MP, brigade support battalion, ground Med-Evac or similar. Answering the phone at the allergy clinic isn't relevant experience. Currently only E-6 SSG 68W-F3 are being sent to the one year long flight paramedic course. Once all active duty SSGs are trained to the paramedic standard, they will send SGT E-5s, then after that SPC E-4s. You can stil get orders to an air ambulance unit and receive the old 3 week class, but it'll be a couple years before you get to paramedic school. You also want to make sure your rifle range and PT scores are top notch. Flight medics need to be excellent soldiers before anything else. Once you get to your unit you'll tell your platoon sergeant your goals. He'll help you along and help with the paperwork requests. Without that one year (minimum) experience as a field medic you'll be 100% useless as a flight medic. Here is a link (even though you asked for none) about a female flight medic who broke her leg and continues to fly rescue for 60 hours. She's hard as nails. http://thisainthell.us/blog/?p=29882 She's the 6th woman in history to be award the Distinguished Flying Cross.
