What does it mean "Work for your salvation in fear and trembling."? What should I be afraid of then?

Philippians 2:12. Doesn't say what I should be afraid of, and why I should tremble. Can anyone give me some specifics on this? Also does it mean I'm supposed to go though life like that, fearing and trembling? .

Answer:
It says work *out*... not work for. That is a pretty major change in what it says... so let's get that straight. It was work out your salvation... not work for it. You should realize the great and fearful wrath God is sparing you from. His own wrath, for your sin... of which you are unworthy to receive the grace He has given you. You should with great humility... sincerity... fear and trembling... work out or come to understanding with God and the gift He was given you. Seek Him, and see what purpose He has for you in this world.

Never forget that God is Sovereign in your life, and that you are not great in the work that you do, but instead just a sinner in His hands. Hope that helps.

Much like being in fear of upsetting your parents while growing up.. this would be a fear of displeasing God.

Philippians 2:12 - " 12 Consequently, my beloved ones, in the way that YOU have always obeyed, not during my presence only, but now much more readily during my absence, keep working out YOUR own salvation with fear and trembling;" The key word in this Scripture is obey... it explains what the Scripture is talking about. Think of it this way, a kids and even now many children don't like to disappoint their parents especially if they had a good relationship with them. They fear in disappointing them So they be obedient. Same with Jehovah God, those with a good relationship with him fear in disappointing him. So we be obedient. This is what it means to fear God, afraid of disappointing him. When it said trembling it was just emphasizing the point of fear. [email protected]

The phrase provides a sense of urgency that is basically saying to not put off the day of salvation. Paul's statement is also an affirmation that faith alone won't do it, but that one must be actually engaged in "the work". There are also passages that talk about being doers of the work, and not hearers only.
