FIRE BELLIED TOADS MALE OR FEMALE?

How many Fire Bellied Toads can live in a 10 gallon tank?

  • Hi, I have a 10 gallon tank and I am really interested in getting Fire Bellied Toads, but I have a few questions. 1. How many can I fit in a 10 gallon? I was planning on having at least two of them 2. Should I get all males or all females, because I don't want them to breed? 3. Do they need a heater in their tank? I heard that they don't. 4. How big can they get? 5. How long do they live? 6. What illnesses are they mainly prone to? 7. Is it okay if their only diet consisted of frozen brine shrimp cubes, or are crickets a necessity? 8. When are they most active? 9. Where can you buy frog moss, like at Petco or Petsmart? 10. Is it true that they can be 'tamed' if they are gently handled enough times? Thank you so much. I have done my research, but it's really hard to get all the facts straight when every website tells you different information. Please only answer if you truley know, of have/had owned Fire Bellied Toads before. PS: I do realize that they secrete toxins, so please don't stress about getting that point across. I would really like to handle them often.

  • Answer:

    1) 2 toads can fit in a 10 gallon tank. They require 5 gallons each 2) Doesn't really matter, you can just scoop out the eggs if you don't want babies and let the eggs dry out. 3) Only if the room you keep them in is cold. They do well at room temperature, but they won't complain either if you have heater in their terrarium. 4) 2" SVL 5) 15 years 6) Same as most other frogs: Stress, bacterial infections, chytrid, ranavirus, fungal infections, red leg syndrom, etc.... 7) No it is not ok for their diet to consist of mainly brine shrimp cubes. Frogs require LIVE MOVING FOODS. A varied diet will help keep your pets healthy and happy. Here is a list of good food options to feed your pet. -Dubia Roach Nymphs, also other species of feeder roaches (Discoid, Lobster, Turkistan, etc...) -Crickets -Red Wrigglers -Flightless Fruit Flies, Drosophelia hydei -Butterworms -Waxworms -Small Hornworms -Small Silkworms 8) They are always active, during the day and the night. 9)Do not buy "frog moss" or any other type of dried moss. This is hazardous to your pets health. Frogs are very clumsy eaters and have a pounce and shove approach to eating. Substrate is very often shoved into their mouth while they are eating. Substrates like moss have long stringy partilces that get caught in your pets digestive track and they can die from this if they cannot pass it. Also, the Flukers Frog moss is dyed a horrible green colour, this is not good for your frog to be living in that. 10) It is very bad for your frog health to be handling them. Frogs are ornamental pets, just like fish. You wouldn't take a goldfish out of it's tank to play with it, the same goes for frogs. If you want a pet that you can pester, then maybe you should get a cat or a dog. Frogs are highly prone to stress, and if you've never seen an amphibian die from stress, it's not pretty to watch them wither away to nothing. You skin also has come into contact with a lot of different chemicals (Soaps, sanitizers, cologne, perfumes, grease, sweat, foods, chlorine, etc...) during the day. Frogs have very delicate skin absorbant skin that will absorb these chemicals, you can make the frog physically sick from handling it. No, frogs do not become "tame". They are not a domestic animal, you cannot teach them to do tricks or commands. Amphibians do not have advaced brains that will comprehend reasoning. Their brains are very primitive. When you pick up a frog, the only think it will be thinking is that you are going to eat it. Every time you pick it up, that is what it will think, doesn't matter if it's today or in 10 years. Amphibians really do not sound like an appropriate pet for you. You should look into getting something else. Leoaprd Geckos and Created Geckos can both live in a 10 gallon terrarium and will tolerate handling much better then frogs are able to.
