Can I make 7.1 surround sound with computer external speakers?

I know when you buy a desktop it may come with 2 external speakers. Can I buy those external speakers and connect them to my laptop to make 7.1 surround sound. I know the point one is the subwoofer but I think you know the jist of my question

You would need a 7.1 sound card for processing....then you would need 7.1 computer speakers that are compatible with the sound-card you purchased and installed......

Keep in mind that the only 7.1 audio is available only on certain Blu Ray disc movies. Computers does not have the capability to decode the Dolby Digital True HD or the DTS Master Audio. Hope this will help you out.
