Why doesn't my tv have sound?

Why doesnt the sound come out through the tv through my VGA cord?

  • i bought a VGA cord to hook my laptop to my tv. and it does great but when i plug it in the sound of the movie or video im watching doesnt come out throught the tv. leaving me to have to strain my ears to hear the sound throiugh my computer. why does it do that?

  • Answer:

A VGA cable only carries video, no sound. To get sound from your computer to the TV, you will need to run a separate cable to the TV. Some TV's VGA input have a separate set of red/white audio inputs. You will need to get an adapter cable that has the small headphone plug on one end for your laptop, and the larger red/white plugs for the TV on the other end. You can find this adapter or cable at a Radio Shack. Alternatively you can connect that cable to your stereo or home theater system.

audio is not standard on VGA, so your TV should have a set of either RCA or 3.5mm stereo audio inputs that are active when the VGA channel is selected. you can feed audio from the laptop headphone out to those connecters.

Because VGA is a video connector. There's no audio component, and it was never designed to have one, like with HDMI. If you want audio, you'll have to get yourself an adapter that lets you hook in the VGA signal as well as your audio out (the connector used for headphones and external speakers).
