How to become a process server?

How do you become a process server in Massachusetts?

  • I've heard that mostly anyone can do it, you just have to be registered. How do I become registered? If there's a test, what do I need to know to take it, and where can I learn these things?

  • Answer:

What you "heard" is wrong. You have to be certified which means taking a course and passing a test. Most process servers are law enforcement officers such as constables and deputy sheriffs. You will need a gun and a bullet proof vest. And pray that you don't get your head blown off by a shotgun when you knock on someone's door. Those people are avoiding service and will run out the back door when you drive up. They move frequently and you might drive a hundred miles a day looking for someone and not find them. And if you don't serve them, you don't get paid. You will need someone as your contact that works in the State employment office whom you can call and get them to look up where the person works. Because without that information, you may never find them. You might want to rethink that job as a career.
