MOVIE: AVENGERS, movie quandary re: Thor?
-
Well, After Thor (the movie) came out last year, his character and his abilities were made apparent in his 'solo movie'. Enough of that. Q 1. During Avengers (2012), why did Director Joss Whedon "dumb-down" Thor? Q 2. Outside of Thor's other-worldly strength as showcased by his mano-a-mano matchups versus the Hulk albeit sometimes comedic, did ANYONE NOTICE that not once did Thor use any of his abilities against the earth invaders? Example 1: Thor stood earth-bound, alongside Captain America, basically on the ground the WHOLE time simply punching the badguys with an occasional Hammer/Mjolnir throw "here & there". Example 2: NOT once did we see Thor use his flight, his lightning*, nor his superhuman, other-worldly godlike strength against the badguys in midair. In his solo movie, Thor (2011) was seen taking on Frost Giants and their beasts that dwarfed or equaled in size the earth invaders in Avengers (2012). * yes Thor did use it ONCE against Iron Man during their in the woods skirmish.

Answer:
Thor flies about 4 times in the movie. (He flies onto the top of the jet...he flies Loki down to Earth...he flies to the top of the Chrysler bldg....and there's one other scene where he spins his hammer and then hurls it and flies off. He also calls up wind (once), and lighting (twice) in the movie. Also, it is implied by Loki that the storm that occurs when they are on the jet is caused by Thor. Cap asks if he's scared of a little lightening. Loki replies: "No. But I'm generally not fond of what follows it." (i.e. Thor) If you think Thor was Dumbed Down...then all the characters were. (Except maybe Hulk...cos his powers are simpler.) We didn't get to see all the nifty stuff Stark's armor can do. We didn't get to see things Cap can do...like pick up Thor's hammer (tho they showed that the Hulk can't). I mean, this movie was called Avengers, not Thor and His Sidekicks. Not to mention that Thor comes in last because of the plot. NOTE: Re Hulk vs. Thor The strength levels of all characters are constantly changing. Sometimes the superfolk lose their powers completely. That's one of the "tricks" that keep these characters interesting. So certainly there are times when Thor is far stronger than Hulk, and vice versa. That said, this website has a scan of a Marvel comic that categorizes it's heroes by strength. http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/powerherc/marvels-strongest-heroes/75-20380/. It is old (from 1981) and these characters have had TONS of changes since then, but it basically gives you where all these guys stand on the scale, provided they faced off on their "best day." (Of course, lots of new characters have been introduced since 1981, and where they fall on this scale is debatable.) But, this is according to the company that MAKES these comics, not just the opinion of us biased fans who read them. It clearly shows that Hulk is stronger than Thor. Maybe not a lot stronger...but he still "outranks" him.

The Avengers TOTALLY MESSED UP THOR! 1: idk! All he cared about in that movie was getting Loki back to Asgaurd "he killed 80 people in two days" "he's adopted" 2: he DID use his lightning to fry the portal, but there were not many/any scenes of him wacking the chitari with his hammer I was looking forward to seeing Thor and seeing how his character expanded, and it did not..... My fave Avengers USED to be 1: Iron Man (duh lol) 2: Thor 3: Cap. America 4: The Hulk NOW: 1: Iron Man 2: Cap. America and The Hulk are tied 4: Thor

Q1 Thor isn't all powerful as many think he is, the Hulk is easily stronger than him and Captain America can hold his own against him. Joss Whedon would know this, he has worked with the title for years before he went into writing for film and TV. Q2 Thor used the lightning to electrify the Chrysler Building and send a massive attack out against one of the alien invaders ships. The lightning attack is his most powerful one, and uses the most energy, and Thor rarely uses it because of this problem, considering he has the ability to smash through things with his hands and Mjolnir its reserved for attacks which he sees no other options for. ------------------------ Niobe M. Not to spoil anything for you but Agent Phil Coulson is likely not dead, the way it was portrayed in the movie and the fact that Fury rigged the Captain America cards are clues to this.
