Are the jobs I work at during college going to effect my job prospects after I'm finished with school?
-
I am 20 years old and I'm a college student. The only previous jobs I had were cleaning jobs which somewhat didn't like. I only did them because they paid more than min. wage. I wanted a job that didn't involve cleaning. I am smart, friendly, and respectful. I think b/c I have no experience in anything else, it makes it harder for me to find anything else. I got a call back from a call center, but turnover rates are high and it's not a good job from looking at reviews. I want to keep my job longer than a few months so employers don't see me as a student that comes and goes. I also got a phone call about a position as a food runner, but The college I go to is 20-25 min. and if I worked there, it would take at least 40 min. to get back there since whatever job I get I want to keep it. I actually want to keep and like this job since I only worked a few months at my other 2 jobs and had to quit b/c of school, but from now on, I will only take morning classes with an afternoon/evening job so there would be no need to quit anymore. If I don't find something else soon, should I just stick to cleaning since I'm still in college. Will the jobs I have now effect my chances of getting something better when I'm done with school? I'm just really frustrated that I can't get anything else. What should I do??

Answer:
Certain types of jobs can improve your prospects. Go to the career counseling center or the department for your major and see if there are long-term internships available in your field. Those types of jobs might not be advertised publicly, so you'll need to get help from your school to apply for them. You can't get a job anywhere without references, and any job can provide those. It also looks good to stay at any job long enough to get a promotion, so look for a job that will provide opportunities to take on more responsibility.

jobs you get while in college are just ways to make extra money to supplement your income, nothing more nothing less. future employers will only look at them as nothing more than you are not lazy.
