How do I become ordained in Ontario Canada?
-
You hear about it and see it in shows such as how I met your mother and big bang theory, where the main character or characters become able to preform marriages and marry their friends. Hell even Popular youtuber Phil defranco went and did it. So is it possible for an 'average joe' aka me, to become ordained so that I can preform marriages. I live in Ontario Canada and have been trying to find out more information on this but have been getting stumped. If anyone knows information on how I could go about this process or even if it's possible please share

Answer:
Other than the previous suggestion, which would not necessarily lead to the ability to perform marriages in Canada, most provinces have marriage commissioners that are licensed to perform marriages in their province. This requires applying to the proper branch of the provincial government and note that most provinces restrict the number licensed to do this. As for ordination, in Canada you have to attend school and then be ordained in a religion recognized by the Canadian government. You can also be ordained however as a lay minister and given permission by that church to perform marriage ceremonies. A lay minister is just an "average joe" who attended courses for this purpose and has been sponsored by their church congregation. This may vary depending on the faith and church however I know it is done in the United Church of Canada.

Ontario has "marriage commissioners." An ordained person is one, but, you can do it as a job too, not being ordained at all. Ordination is a LONG and involved process for most denominations. It takes at least 8 years for the one I belong to, and can take a lot more.

Ministers, in all parts of Canada, are ordained through their respective denominations only. At that time they are also "gazetted" (proclaimed within their denomination) and issued with an identifying license number, much like a cop gets a badge number. It is that number that is required when ever they sign an official document such as a marriage license. Without it you can't perform marriages and you can't get the license number through some online website in the US. As far as Canadians go, its a novelty thing.

When I looked this up before for a friend I basically came up with the information that in the states is easy as hell. In Ontario, it's basically impossible unless you are a lawyer. I really didn't understand so I just gave up lol.
