How to install Windows 8 on another partition?

  • I wanna install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my computer that has 4 Drives (I think the old Windows 7 is install on :C) Last time i installed the developers preview and end up overiting the old Windows 7 Home Premium (64Bit) OS. So I want to be able to chose OS when the computer is starting up, i want 2 Os on the PC. So how do I install it on other drives, how do I do that? Ive never install an OS by myself before so I dont know much about these stuffs. Is there an option where you browse drives to install on? do I have to divide drives or something like that? Btw if I dont install it on the drive the contains my old os, it wont replace it? Thanks

Your best bet is to use Gparted (A free linux based tool for partitioning your hard drive / resizing it) and GRUB. All you have to do is download the Gparted live disc, pop it in your computer and boot it up from the disc. Once in adjust the sliders to change how much memory the old OS is going to take up, and how much you're going to set aside for the new OS. Once done, take out the disc and reboot, Install the new OS, shut down and reboot. Finally install GRUB (startup tool that lets you choose which OS you want to boot when the computer starts up) and follow the instructions to configure it for your system.

To get started, we first need to create a physical partition on our hard disk. Search for “Disk Management” in the Windows Search box and choose the one with the description – “Create and format hard disk partitions.” Select the Drive Volume that you want to partition (C: in our case) and choose “Shrink Volume. Next you need to specify the size of your new Windows 8 partition. For a basic installation, 20 GB (or 20480 MB) should be fine – you need to put this number in the box that says “Enter the amount of space to shrink.” Windows will now create a new “unallocated” volume with a capacity of 20 GB. Right click that volume and choose “New Simple Volume.” Inside the Simple Volume Wizard, leave the volume size at the default value(1), assign a new Drive Letter to this volume (2) and then format the partition using the NTFS format (3). Congratulations – the new hard disk partition is now ready to house your copy of Windows 8.

hi sam, you answered your own question so allow me to explain what you want to do is to make a dual boot so this is very complicated because this means that you have to format your hard drive to install both windows 7 and windows 8. okay now what you will need to do is to decide which windows that you plan to use the most then you will install that windows on your C/ drive then when that is completely installed you have to register that window and do your updates then install the second windows on your D/ drive. so when you reboot the windows that you use all the time will be on the top of the list and the other one will be below the first one. are you canfused yet? now when they both get installed then you have to have both of them register with microsoft and all of your updates in and your computer tweaked the way you want it. good luck i hope i was helpful to you
