How do you know when pink convict cichlids are paired?

Questions about cichlids?

  • I know that all cichlids are super aggressive fish and ur lucky to try and fit two different kinds together. Well I just bought a flower horn who I's about 2-3 inches long and very aggressive and I just added a 1/2-1 inch convict to my tank as well as a plecotams sp (algae eater) the flower horn chased my convict all around and now my convict is hiding in a big fake log I have in my tank and I can't get it to come out... The flowerhorn nips at my algae eater but the algae eater is ok I'm just worried about my convict I know they can live together I have seen it before I just don't know what to do for the time being??? Any ideas they are in a 55 gallon for now until they get bigger. Idk if I should get a tank divider or what

  • Answer:

Flowerhorns are one of the species of Cichlid that just cannot, do not and will not play well with others. They need to be alone in species tanks. The aggression will only get worse as the FH grows, and grow fast it will, and it will kill the Convict. If it notices the Pleco it'll have a crack at that too. Flowerhorns are hybrids of several exceptionally territorial fish, including Red Devils and Midas Cichlids. If you've committed to own a Flowerhorn, you need to go get a second tank for it!

Not all Cichlids are super Aggressive i keep a range of cichlids in the same tank and unless they are breeding and spawning they are fine . But your flower horn the bigger it gets the more aggressive it will get . Remove one or the other that is what you should be doing .

!There is no reason for Ignorance !call a vet!

This flower horn will more than likely only be able to be housed by itself. Your going to have to decide what fish to keep. You could choose to divide your tank. Whatever you decide I would do very soon. This fish will pester, nip, and chase your fish until they are so stressed they will die... * Some fish are just like that. Cichlids can be a risk to mix. We as cichlid owners realize the risk of mixing these fish. Flower horns can very aggressive and I often see them alone in aquariums due to their over aggressive behavior. *Edit; dont listen to some of these bozos. There are ways around every rule. It is possible to mix these fish. However, mixing cichlds depends on a few factors. Water conditions is one. Sometimes temp,PH, chemicals effects fish temperament. Sometimes, like in your tank its just the fishes personality.... There are a few species that's harder to mix. Your fish happens to be one of them. FH, Midas, Jaguars, Dovi, Pike, adult True Festi to name a few are a real challenge. The art of picking isn't just species its temperament. if you choose a FH at a pet store and the fish is all by itself in a tank there is a reason. Same goes with any cichlid. Pet stores are not going to house 1 fish let tank unless there is a reason... When I choose my cichlids for more community settings I will choose the fish thats lest aggressive in a tank of many. You know, that little guy scared hiding in the corner all discolored and dark. You choose him and you'll have your best chances. Also put that fish in a tank with larger fish... Anyway, just a couple tools I use... Good luck!
