Where would I go in Japan for a full time job?

Applying for a Job in Japan from within Japan?

  • For just a little background, I'm an American currently in Japan working part time on a Student visa, hoping to work full time in Japan teaching English in the near future. In a few months I'll need to go back to America to graduate, but I should be ready to come back to Japan by the end of December of this year. Anyway, I know it's easier to get a job if you're applying from within Japan, so my question is, are there any options for going to Japan and then applying for a working visa from within the country?

  • Answer:

To switch from a visitor visa first you find a job, your new employer then obtains a certificate of eligibility from the immigration bureau, then you you take the certificate to Seoul (or wherever you like outside of Japan, I guess), drop it and your passport off at the Japanese embassy, and then come back and pick it up with the new visa stamped in it the next day. It's all about maintaining a polite fiction about visas+make-work for the airlines, I guess.

First of all, if you want to get a job teaching English, you'll need to have already finished your degree. It is required to get a job and a working visa teaching English. If you have a college degree, you can get a job from within Japan. I did that quite easily a few years ago.
