How do I withdraw from my public school?

How bad is it to "withdraw" from a class freshman year, if I want to go to medical school?

  • Okay, so I kind of "leaped" ahead and thought I could "do it" and took a senior level microbiology class during this term of my freshman year of college. BAD IDEA. Should not have done it! I have failed the first exam (53%) and that class only has two exams, a final, and 10% attendance. My next exam is on Tuesday, and I am really not confident that I'm going to do well. The teacher said this will be a hard exam. I'm afraid I'm actually gonna fail the class! I WISH I would get a C, that would be nice, even a C- would do it, but I don't know if I can handle it! So much information, and I have so much other stuff to do than study for that class! I have to work 20 hours a week, and I'm taking 18 credits total this term including that 4 credit class, and it's all just piling up... I feel super depressed and afraid right now that this will ruin my GPA and everything. HELP! Should I just study hard and "hope to pass", or should I withdraw?

  • Answer:

If it is still early enough to withdraw from the class with no reported grade, then I would do that. Retake it later when you are ready. Also, a C- and even a C is not by any means an acceptable grade in any class if you truly hope to get into medical school. Maybe you should talk to an adviser about scheduling your classes, especially if there is nothing to automatically stop you from registering for higher level classes having not taken the appropriate prerequisites.

Withdraw. You can always retake it when you're ready.

Withdrawing sometimes is better than failing. If you can withdraw and get a W for a grade instead of an F, do it. W has no effect on your GPA and an F would, ESPECIALLY so early on in the your degree. The more classes you have, the harder it is for your GPA to drop if you get an F, but when you are just starting out, it can drop real fast because you don't have that many credits for it to weigh with (your overall gpa is weighted with the amount of credits you have). a W won't look bad, so long as you can explain it. Just say "I got too ahead of myself" and just make sure you recover quickly after that and don't let it happen again. It only matters if you have a lot of Ws in a lot of serious classes.
