CATHOLICISM QUESTIONS...?

  • Hi i attend a religion class and i am given these questions and wanted to see if i was correct or not. 1. Any abortion, spontaneous or induced, is gravely sinful. I chose True 2. Laws, fashions, and entertainment are some things that can provoke scandal. I chose True 3. When confronted with an unjust attacker, we are free to use any means at our disposal to repel the attacker. I chose False 4. The Catholic Church has taught since her beginning that abortion is gravely sinful and evil. I chose True 5. The Catholic Church teaches that capital punishment is never justified and may never be used. True or False? 6. Since we can kill a suffering animal to put it out of its misery, we should be allowed to do so with people, since people are more important than animals. I chose False 7. To allow a person to die naturally after all reasonable efforts have been made to save the person’s life, is not euthanasia and is morally acceptable. I chose True 8. The Church is against contraception, but it is O.K. with allowing a woman to sterilize themselves by having a tubal ligation or a man to sterilize himself by having a vasectomy. I chose False 9. The ordinary means to sustain human life include such things as food, water, medicine, and normal care of the body. To deny such things to any person, sick or well, is gravely sinful. I chose True 10. The Old Testament says we should treat others with the notion of “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” Therefore the Church is O.K. with allowing a person to take revenge whenever he or she has been harmed. I chose False

  • Answer:

The one's that are incorrect: 1. Is false. A "spontaneous abortion" is another phrase for a miscarriage. Miscarriage is not gravely sinful - it's out of your control. 5. If false. From the Catechism (http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c2a5.htm#2267) "Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically non-existent."

Other answers

5 is false and as for 3, God is okay with self-defense All the others are correct, at least to my knowledge

Michael

1 False, a spontaneous abortion is not under your control 5 is not a matter of Faith. 6. False we should be concerned for a good death but because we are not just animals we are not to be put down like a dog. This is just my best but well-informed input.

Matthew

1. Correct answer is False. A spontaneous abortion is a miscarriage - the woman doesn't do anything to make it happen, so she's not guilty of anything, and hence it's not "gravely sinful." 2. Correct answer is True. 3. Correct answer is probably false, but if there was anything in the question about your life being in imminent danger, then the answer is true. 4. Correct answer is true. 5. Correct answer is false. 6. Correct answer is false. 7. Correct answer is true. 8. Correct answer is false. 9. I think this was a trick question - medicine may or may not be ordinary means, so I'd say false. 10. Correct answer is false.

Right: 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,10 Wrong: 3 (because we need to defend ourselves sometimes, Church is not against self-defense), 5 would be false. Some death penalties are justified, but it's a very very slim chance that any that we see today would be okay. This one is a slippery slope.
