What is your career in law enforcement like?

What could the Marines offer for someone who wants to make a career in the fire service or law enforcement?

  • I just finished my degree. I'm got an AA in Fire Science. I wanted to go into the Marines when I was in high school and right after I graduated but my parents were going through a divorce and my sister got sick so it just wasn't the right time. So because of that I never really researched enough on careers in the military. I went to a local community college because it was cheap and I got a very generous deduction for being a Volunteer Firefighter in my community. I also want to keep going to school but the thing is I don't have the money to get a B.S. There is no cheap community colleges near me that offer B.S. There are public and city colleges near me but aren't as affordable as teachers in HS said. I don't wanna join the Marines for a way to finish school, I truly wanna serve my country because I have a lot things in this world that people don't have. My grandfather was a Marine and my Dad wanted to join but couldn't because he has diabetes. Can anyone explain to me how the Montgomery GI bill works? I always hear so many stories from Veterans talking about how recruiters lie about promising you so much. Also, people tell me the Marines have cut back on Firefighting careers. I've also considered getting a B.S. in Criminal Justice. I either wanna be a Police Officer or Firefighter and I really wanna finalize my career. I know the military probably has much more to offer in law enforcement but I do enjoy being a Volunteer Firefighter, I love the work and would love to get on a paid Fire Department but if I was offered a Police I job I'd take it. Thanks for reading this.

  • Answer:

The marines do have a firefighting career field, but it's hit or miss trying to get it. If you want a contract for firefighting, your best bet is to do it through the Air Force. I'm a USAF firefighter and there were 4 marines in my class at Goodfellow afb who were basically randomly selected bodies for the job. The Air Force also has much better equipment for the job. If you want to be a cop, you won't have any trouble getting the contract (and maybe a signing bonus) for the AF but I hear the job sucks. The military has switched to the post 9/11 gi bill which gives you the option to pass along benefits to dependents. The payoff also works a little different as far as where exactly the money goes. It is my understanding that it takes 3 years for your benefits to fully mature.

Ask not what your country can do for you, as what you can do for your county--JFK The Montgomery GI Bill is gone. It's now the Post 9-11 GI Bill. It pays for 4 years tuition, fees, books at any state school where you are authorized in-state rates. Recruiters may lie (some do, most don't) but at the end of the day if it's not in your contract it's not in your contract. So if you want something simply ask for it in writing. You usually do not pick your specific career in the USMC. So you might want firefighting, the Marines might want you to drive a tank. Their desires win.
