How do you make a tile map?

When I leave a region on a map in minecraft, and make a new map, why is a new map 0 created?

• i.e. if I have map 4, and my location disappears on the map, instead of map 5 being created, a copy of map 0 is created instead. Am I just being incredibly stupid?

• Answer:

  the map is centered at the crafting table it was created at, if you were to create one in nether you would have a map in nether that is of the ceiling, aether would do something similar... but if you want more maps in survival or hardcore (but not creative) you just need to make a crafting table in that area, and then make a map there
