Why should I work in marketing?

Would this marketing idea work? If no, why not?

• Imagine-somebody with a lot of money opens up a shopping business, like a cosco type store, only he makes everything REALLY cheap to buy, so cheap, he's losing money. he opens up many other stores, with products at very low prices, so people begin to shop at ONLY this place, by now all the others competing stores are out of business because they lost all their customers, but the creator of the big new store is almost bankrupt from all the low prices, and he starts raising prices REALLY high, like 5x they were before he created his store. Here's the thing: By now all the other stores are out of business and everyone is going bankrupt because of the super high places at his store so they cannot make their own store. So basically this guy would have it set for life, right? Sorry for the big explanation, bu would this work?

• Answer:

  Theoretically yes, actually no. Someone would wait until he has exhausted his entire fortune driving everyone else out of business, then they would come in and open a big store and sell at 10% above cost and he would not be able to stay in business because he would have to pay interest on the debt he accrued. The steel and gasoline industries are interesting because when the prices are going up, the companies are buying cheap raw materials and selling at an increase price, and they make a lot of money. However, the opposite happens at the peak. The companies sometimes literally have to buy the raw materials at a higher price than the finished product, and that is what sorts the big boys who can plan ahead from the ones who spent too much money on the way up.
