Why do I have to take Latin at school?

Why do schools teach Latin?

  • I take Latin at school, but I was talking with a friend about it and he told me that Latin is useless because it's a dead language. I enjoy Latin, but I think his question is valid. What are your opinions of this?

    I'm taking Latin right now, too. I guess it's useful because a large proportion of English words (and the other Romance languages) derive from Latin. SAT words can be easier to figure out when you have a background of the Latin language. Also, it supposedly improves your sentence structure. I'm in Latin 2, and after all the stuff we've been learning, I kind of understand why.

If you haven't taken your SATs yet, it will help you! One big section of the test are root words, and since you know Latin you can ace that part of the test. The SATs is the most Important high school test and knowing Latin ins beneficial for it.

I take a gcse crash course in latin, however it's extra curricular in my school and you have lessons after school. I don't enjoy the subject, and I had no desire to learn latin, I took it purely because it would look good when I apply for University; providing I get a good grade in the exam.

because latin has ties with other languages, such as french, spanish, italian and english. if you have a reasonable knowledge of latin it will help you with those other languages and it also ties into stuff like law and history where many important texts are in latin. You also need latin for medicine and vetinairy stuff because many scientific names of diseases, animal species and medicine is in latin.

It's valuable to anyone who wants to study medicine or law, because a lot of legal terms are in Latin. Same for medicine. If you enjoy it, stick with it and don't worry what your friend says. I took it in 9th grade; it also comes in handy for a lot of everyday language - example-'mal' meaning 'bad,' as in malignant. Good luck!
