My laptop keeps shutting down?

Laptop keeps shutting off for no reason?

  • I have a Windows 7 Asus U52 laptop that keeps shutting off, when the battery still has 41% power. It doesn't warn me when the battery is low before shutting off like it should, because, well, there is still a lot of battery life left. Also, before when it would shut off because battery life was low, I would turn it back on, and everything would be just as I left it (browser, itunes, skype would still be open), but it no longer does that. I have to reopen everything and I often lose material I was using online because of it. What could the problem be and how can I fix it?

  • Answer:

If you have Windows7 go to control panel, then, open power settings, then next to your power plan you will see Change plan settings. Click on it, then click on Change advanced power settings. Scroll down, find Battery, expand. Find Low Battery Notification, expand. If it says OFF, change to ON. Right there you can also set up what your computer should do when battery goes down to critical level by changing Critical Level Action and Critical Battery Level. After you done press OK.

Yes, as suggested it can be due to overheating. It can be also due to a corrupted Windows or virus and malware. Download the Trinity rescue kit and burn a live CD. boot using this CD and clean your computer of all virus, malware. If you are able to boot from the Live CD, it means there is no hardware problem and no over heating. http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?content=TRINITY_RESCUE_KIT_DOWNLOAD

If you're not getting any blue screens before it shuts down, it might be due to the laptop overheating. Are the fans working as they should be? If you do get a blue screen, and you're not able to read the message (because sometimes they just flash for a second), it's usually a driver problem (so update your video and sound card drivers), or faulty memory (in which case, you'd have to send it back to the manufacturer, unless you want to buy the memory yourself and try to install it in a laptop which is not very comfortable/can be expensive).
