Am I eligible for the GI Bill?

Am I eligible for my dad's GI Bill?

  • I know that you can transfer GI bills now but we aren't sure if I am eligible. My dad served in the military for 12 years, he got out in October of 2004. So he served through 9/11. We wanted to transfer the Bill for my college.. Am I eligible?

  • Answer:

No, he is not eligible to transfer any benefits. Benefits could only be transferred by Active Duty members starting in 2009. You father would have to have been on Active Duty in 2009 and transferred the benefits while on Active Duty status. There is nothing he can do now. He did not have the transferrable Post 9/11 GI Bill anyway, he had the Montgomery GI Bill which is non-transferrable.

No it is not he would have had to been Active Duty in 2009 in order to transfer it after changing from the Montgomery to the 9/11. If he is still under the Montgomery then he only has 2 more years to use it before it is gone. If he changes to the 9/11 he will have another 7 years to use it.

no. he has the old Bill which is not transferable you had to be on AD 1 August 2009 when the new Bill went into affect in order to be able to switch.
