How to cook and store a whole chicken ?
-
Basically I've decided to buy a whole chicken to save myself some money, Will be using it for meat in sandwichs, Breast meat for roast dinners, Legs for chicken and chips, Currys etc. But my question is what would be the best way to cook and store this thing so it'll last a good few days atleast. A way that doesnt require me to go out and buy new kitchen stuff would be idea ;p. I've got pans but non big enough to fit a whole chicken in, Got some oven baking trays etc though. I was thinking perhaps to remove the legs / wings etc and freeze or store them in some contain for later and just cook the main carcus of the chicken. Then how to store the cooked chicken ? I'd normally just cover it in film or foil and use it up the next day but i need it ideally to last about 5days after cooked. Im guessing it'd be best to remove the chicken from the carcus after its cooked to be stored ? So lemme know how you'd advise to cook and store it so that it can be reused in multiple dishs.

Answer:
Half the chicken, cook quicker in oven, then separate everything you want. And the rest in a freezer

I would suggest you joint the chicked and pack into freezer bags, each containing enough for a meal. Freeze straight away as it will last 3-5 days in the fridge

You can cook the chicken, cut it apart and then freeze those portions individually. You can freeze cooked meat without issue. Then just thaw what you want when you want it. You can cut the breast bone of the chicken and then lay it flat on a baking sheet, then cook it in the oven (about 90 minutes at 350). Once it's cooked and cool, cut it into the portions you want and freeze it.

The variety of things you want to make all require different cooking methods and flavorings, so the ONE thing you DON'T want to do is cook it all at once. Might I also add that one chicken may not go as far as you are thinking it will, because a lot of people can eat a half chicken themselves. Nonetheless, by dissecting the bird into 8 or 9 pieces you can freeze the LEGS and WINGS together, then the thighs and back together, and then the breast pieces together. You can use plastic wrap or bags to do this and thaw at your convenience, depending on what you'll be using them for. Thighs could be great for your sandwichs. Legs and wings could be great for a breading. Breasts could be great for roasting OR sautéing. And one more thing, you can save the backbones, wing tips, neck and any gizzards for a stock too!

I buy a pre-roasted chicken at the grocery store's deli department. At home I take the chicken apart. Slice the breast into sandwich pieces, lay them out on a small pan or piece of foil, freeze for a couple hours and then put them in a baggie. By freezing them this way, all you need to do is pull out what you need and let it defrost before using. I do the same with the other parts of the chicken. Sometimes I will make the complete dinners such as mashed potatoes and vegetables. And then freeze a serving. When ready to eat, take out the one serving and microwave. Instant dinner. But if you wish to cook your own chicken, use the oven. Scroll way down this website for how to do this and the time and temps: http://www.helpwithcooking.com/cooking-poultry/roast-chicken.html
