How does someone get into acting?

How does someone who's a minor get into acting?

  • I'm confused to how all these young kids get into acting? I understand adults possibly have gone to an acting school and had lots of experience in other films, but how can an 11 year old kid do that when they have to attend school? I am 15 years old and i really wan't to get into acting from a young age! I live in Australia which limits me getting into films as Australia isn't like america. Could i please have some advice how those kids have done it and how someone like me in Australia and of my age would get into acting?

  • Answer:

    they practically started from birth.

I started taking acting classes when I was 6 or 7 and was accepted into a Children's Theatre Company in Chicago where I performed from age 8-10 before my family moved. I did school plays all through school and some community theatre since the area we moved was over 50 miles from the nearest big city so there were no good theatre companies or schools near me. There are a lot of acting classes in Australia. A friend of mine lives near Woollongong and her 9 year old daughter takes acting classes 1 evening a week and on Saturdays.

A lot of child actors are born into showbiz families - so they have a head start. Many kids go to a full-time stage school, some from the age of 6, where they take normal school lessons but also acting, singing and dance classes. It's very hard work, and they get almost no free time at all. Other kids go to an ordinary school every weekday, but take classes at a good acting school an evening or two a week, and also a few hours at a weekend. At 15, if you haven't already started, it's too late to become an actor as a child. There are a lot of professional actors over 18 who can easily pass for teenagers, and they're the ones who will win the auditions. If you're serious about acting, and are prepared for many years of very hard work, join a good class and start learning. Then try for a place at a good drama school or university. That's the way forward. But even after all that, there's no guarantee that you'll ever get much paid acting work. It's very competitive, and the best most actors ever get is 2 or 3 weeks' paid work a year. The rest of the time they're working in ordinary jobs. If you'd be happy with that, and have no silly illusions about ever becoming rich and famous - go for it. Good luck!
