Answer:
It depends on where you're going, really. Things vary due to terrain and climate. But general camping rules say you should probably bring: - A tent. - Two tarps. One to cover the tent in case it rains (some tents come with their own) and another to put under the tent to make it more comfortable and to keep the bottom of the tent dry. - A flashlight and a lantern. Electric, preferably. Bring some spare batteries too. - A sleeping bag. If it's going to be cold, get one of those thermal ones. - pillow(s). Always essential. - Maybe some spare blankets if it's going to be cold, or to put underneath your sleeping bag for comfort. - Something like a book to read, or maybe a sketch pad. In case you get bored or whatever. - If there's no toilets, you'll have to bring a small shovel and some toilet paper. Or buy a portable toilet. Spare toilet paper is recommended even if there are toilet facilities, as they may not have any there. - Insect repellent. Enough said. That's all I can think of. Have fun camping! And don't get eaten by bears. :)

I don't have enough information to give you advice. Are you car camping? Are you backpacking? What is your climate? You have food, are you cooking it? Are you in a spot that allows open fires? Do you have a water purifier and iodine pills? Are you in an area where you have to consider bear safety? Do you have a tent, pad, and sleeping bag? Do you have rain gear, first aid kit, and flashlights?

No basics that you should have anytime your are outdoors? 1) A compass 2) matches or a couple lighters, some dry kindling 3) a knife (I prefer a fixed blade) If it is a sport coat and tie type of day I wear my Case XX Kodiak. For just everyday casual I prefer a Kabar. And if I am feeling REALLY festive I wear one made for me by an American Indian friend. Unless of course it is just backyard camping or the "canned" park or recreation area type place where you can just buy or borrow anything you need. If you can see or hear other people your about 5 miles too close together. Like the 3 Stooges said, "Spread out" Nyuck, nyuck, Nyuck
