How do I change the contact name in MSN?

Can change my children's name if I can't contact their Father?

  • My children (aged 15 and 10) have asked if they can change their name from their Father's to their Step Father's last name. This last year their Father has without telling them moved across the country and has ceased all contact with them nor has he responded to any of their requests for him to make contact. He has also not responded when I asked him if he would like to be part of the decision regarding our children's education and he does not pay child support. I would of course ask him if he agrees to the change but I do not expect a response - can I go ahead and change their names without his agreement if he is uncontactable or refusing to respond? To allay any concerns, the children suggested this without any prompting from us, we have asked them to think about it for another six months to be sure it is really what they want to do and also to consider whether they would still be happy with the proposed name change if their Dad resumed contact. I think we have been fair to everyone in this. Thanks in advance for any answers

  • Answer:

Hey, so sorry for your children's pain they must be feeling having a father who doesn't care about them. Luckily you have found a new man who loves you and your children. I don't think you can change their surname without their fathers approval as my sister went through something very similar and she wasn't allowed too. I think legally your children need to be 18 before they can change their names. But in saying that please seek some legal advice, some places offer advice for free these days. And then at least you know what to do and when to do it. Hope all goes well for you and your children.

I went through this with my two sons, I had to use my hubby's name for two years, school doctors etc and then they will be interviewed by family services and then you do need dad's permission, however I could not find there father so I had to prove I tried to find him without luck and permission was granted. However their full birth certificates never changed only their abstract will change. I t is a very long process (at least 2 years, mine took 3 years) and they can change it themselves at 18...good luck..
