How can i calculate the cumulative percentage?

How do I calculate the percentage of water and name this hydrate?

  • I have a chemistry lab that requires me to calculate the percentage of water and name a hydrate of barium chloride (BaCl2). I have the following measures from my lab group: the mass of the hydrate before heating is 2.00g, and after heating, the mass of the anhydrate is 1.16g. I know I have .84 grams of water from this, but how do I turn this into calculating the percentage and determining how to name the hydrate? Your help is greatly appreciated. :-)

  • Answer:

    Hi NerdyProtagonistGirl, We have BaCl2, n H2O M(BaCl2) = 208,23 g/mol M(BaCl2, nH2O) = ( 208,23 + 18n ) g/mol m(BaCl2) / m(BaCl2, nH2O) = M(BaCl2) / M(BaCl2, nH2O) 1,16 / 2,00 = 208,23 / (208,23 + 18n) . . . After resolving : n = 8 BaCl2, 8H2O Baryum Chloride Octohydrated
