WRITERS: Tips for writing in First Person POV......?

  • What is your advice, tips, or tricks to making the First Person POV really *POP!* when it hits the page? I seem to have trouble making my FP POV unique(as everyone has their own voice). Thank you.

  • Answer:

Try to create a character that relates to you, and then write what you would do in that situation. I use this method and I've improved in my first-person pov writings. Also try adding some thoughts, like 'I never really thought James would say that, but I guess he's just changed a bit since the last time I spoke with him.' Good luck!

Try reading aloud - when you read silently, things often swim along just fine, but when you read them aloud, you realize, "OMG - no one talks that way" or thinks that way, or acts that way. It's a true litmus test, especially for First Person POV.

Really throw yourself into the role of the person. Enjoy becoming someone else for a while so that you can write as if you really are them. What, exactly, would you be feeling? Thinking? Seeing? Hearing? Touching? Tasting? Smelling? Just write as if you are in the setting and as if you have become the person. That is the best 1st person POV I've seen. Also, don't say "I" too much. Such as play with rearranging the word order in sentences. You could rearrange the following: "I walked to the store to get some milk. I ran into my friend Michael on the way there. I was glad to see him." to something a bit more interesting like: "Considering we were out of milk, I decided to go out and get some milk. While I was out, I ran into my friend Michael which I was glad for." Because too many "I"s in a story can really kill it. Good luck to you!

It is a narration. Nothing more. This is the story of how I got a cat. Are we suppose to be interested in you or how you got the cat? What is interesting about your narration?

Ditto, reading work out loud. Also, write in present tense. Here are some other thoughts: http://renee-miller.suite101.com/tips-on-writing-first-person-pov-a396385
