Reasons to continue study to become a doctor after becoming a registered nurse?
-
im currently in year 12 (vce) and ive decided that id like to take a bachelor of nursing next year (probably in a double degree of some sort). nursing is something ive wanted to do on and off for about 7 years now. i'm under the impression that nursing is more hands on, where i would get to spend more time caring for patients than i would if i were to if i became a doctor. my grandma was in hospitals a couple of years ago and i used to catch the bus to visit her. i really liked being there and talking her her and the other women in her room and as strange as it might come across, i just liked being in that kind of hospital environment. i was thinking that after my four year nursing degree, that i might apply for some graduate entry medicine programs. i keep thinking that im not going to satisfied with being a nurse(although i know i would love being one) mainly because i dont want to just be administering medicine to patients or getting them ready for treatments-i want to know why they need that specific drug/treatment and how it will help the patient. i want to figure out whats wrong with the patient and how to treat her/him-not just give the patient certain medication because the doctor has prescribed it. i'm still young and very ignorant in what nurses and doctors specifically do during an average day off work but i think maybe i should continue my study to become a doctor-mainly to learn more and well i dont know. im sorry this is so long but i was wondering if you know of anyone or are a doctor who was one a nurse-why did you decide to continue studying? what are some reasons to pursue a career in medicine? thankyou:)

Answer:
A nursing degree will not get you into med school. You would have to go back and get a degree like biology or another science. The science learned for nursing is not in enough depth for med school. You will have to complete the prerequisites for a nursing program before you can apply. Many nursing programs take a year or two to get into due to the large amount of people applying.

Nursing is not a good undergrad degree to get if you want to go to medical school, because the courses will not include all the things you need to get into medical school, like higher mathmatics, physics, organic chemistry, etc. There are better choices for a degree if becoming a doctor is your ultimate goal. If you really want to go the nursing path however, why not consider continuing your education in nursing and become a Nurse Practitioner? They function in a very similar capacity as doctors, seeing patients as a primary care provider, writing prescriptions, etc. That's what I'm doing, because like you, being a regular nurse is just not enough for me. But I don't want to do the med school route because I am more focused on "caring" and holistic health, which is the focus of the nursing model of care. The medical model of care is more about investigating disease/illness/injury and treating that problem. Nursing is more of a "bigger picture" model of caring, addressing the mind, body, and spiritual needs of people, that's why it appeals to me and why I'm continuing down that path. Good luck with your decision.
