Where to visit in the US?

  • I just graduated High School and before I go to my state university, i wanted to travel the US. i have 3,000 saved up, but plan on rationing that for gas and occasionally food. My friend is also coming with me and we want to just drift through the states. We are both very smart and know how to protect ourselves, so don't let that be a concern. We don't mind staying in tents or sleeping in my truck either. If you have ever seen Into the Wild, our drifting will be similar to that. We live in Portland, OR and would love to just go anywhere. I'd like to hear about places to see that perhaps aren't quite as touristy and typical visiting areas (LA, las vegas, ect) thanks!!

  • Answer:

From Oregon drift south, but you might swing inland to take in Yosemite. See San Francisco, and continue down the coast at least as far as Santa barbara, which I think is probably the most beautiful city in the USA. Then head east, take in Phoenix and north to the Grand Canyon, and go through New Mexico, like Albuquerque, which is an amazing state. Texas is rather blah, and takes forever to drive through, so from NM I would head northeast, cut through Oklahoma to Kansas City. If you get past the Mississippi, try to drive through the Great Smokies in North Carolina. From there, your taste: D.C. to the north or Florida to the south. The trip back can hit new highlights or revisit your new favorites

The drive from Portland through Western Montana is just beautiful. Western Montana is the most amazing place I have ever seen in the United States, aside from the Southwest. It is so open and desolate that the wilderness takes my breath away. People call it Big Sky Country for a reason. Take 84 east and then go up through Spokane. Pass through the scablands carved out by the Missoula floods. Follow 90 through Idaho (the mountains and lakes around Coeur d'Alene are stunning). Then head through Missoula, MT down to Yellowstone! But if you want to see more amazing mountains and lakes, head north from Missoula to Glacier National Park.
