What do you do when you get poison ivy in your mouth?

Is it ok to get poison ivy in mouth?

  • I had been exposed to poison ivy ten hours ago...and i just put my fingers In my mouth tasteing my food..would it be inffecting my mouth by doing tht?

  • Answer:

IF you did a thorough job of washing your hands with soap and water, then it most likely will not be an issue. However, if you 'forgot' to wash up, the poison ivy oil could transfer to your mouth. Write down the time/day of initial exposure, the time of this mishap, and watch carefully. Most reactions are within hours. If you develop 'itching' in your mouth seek immediate medical attention (ER if needed). It is possible to die from poison ivy reactions in your mouth/throat or nasal passages. Swelling due to reactions will constrict airways. Make sure someone else KNOWS about this now, and is watching you for signs of 'irritation' or swelling. If your lips or tongue start to swell up, CALL for help, there are shots a paramedic can give to save your life.
