How do you tell the difference between a vga and a svga cable?

  • I know what they do differently but I don’t know how to tell the difference between the two cables. Everywhere I have looked so far has said that they look identical but there has to be a way to tell the difference. Please don’t post a definition of the cables or the difference in the cables performance. Post how to tell the difference between the two cables.

  • Answer:

Unfortunately the terms VGA and SVGA tend to be used interchangeably these days even though originally they were different. The original VGA connector was a 9 pin connector http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/VGA_9_Pin whereas the SVGA connector is a 15 pin connector http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15_pinout.shtml

There is no difference. What you buy as a VGA cable can do high resolutions, and has at least the pins to carry the RGB video and sync signals from the computer. Better cables will have all the ID lines. Yes, old 1st gen VGA was 9 pin, but you would be hard pressed to find one of them.
