If I want to be A Criminal Lawyer?

I want to be a lawyer so what area of law should I study?

  • I want to be a lawyer that deals with criminals(not defending the criminal but representing the non criminal) a lawyer that deals with sueing other people and companies, a lawyer that deals with kids who are being abused and needs to be seperated for their abusers or just with kids in general. A lawyer that deals with child custodial rights, workplace injuries, and buisness. What should I do to prepare myself ev even if I'm only 15 and what kind of law(s) should I expand my knowledge on?

  • Answer:

You will need to get into a decent University (aim top 5) for an undergraduate degree in something. Your undergraduate degree can be in really anything but it should be something you are interested and can do well in. You will need to get a high GPA at least a 3.5/4.0 in the 4-scale system. Once you have completed your first degree you will need to take the LSAT, which is an entrance exam to law school. You will need to get a very good grade on your LSAT as a higher score will mean you can pick from more schools. If you get a low LSAT score, you will not be admitted to any school. The top Law schools in Canada are McGill, U of T, and UBC. Once you have been admitted to a school you will have the opportunity to make a decision of what you want to specialize in. It sounds like you want to work in the public sector and since you're Canadian that means working for the prosecution side. Be advised, working for the government pays substantially less than for the private sector. A law degree takes between 2 and 3 years with a one year internship (called 'articling') before you will be able to take the bar and practice independently. Being a lawyer is a long road. Do well in school and focus on getting high grades and scholarships, unless your parents are willing to pay up to $50 000 in tuition and book. Even if your parents can pay, you'll need the grades anyway. Good luck!
