How Windows 7 Ultimate(64bit version) effects to pc which has law performance?
-
I have a pc which has Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.80GHz ~ 2.8GHz(1 Core,1 Logical Processor) . and 2GB RAM,40GB hard disk.Ealier XP sp2 ran as OS and, newly Win 7 64bit version was installed. I want to know whether this 64bit version overloads, reduces performance of pc hardware or not suitable, any disadvantage is there, or else it is ok.How it may affect to the hardware durability? or better to use 32bit version? The reason to move to win 7 is,workbench doesnt support xp sp2. Up to now, the pc works well. Noramally I use Netbeans, mysql workbench, dreamweaver, photoshop, java, mysql server 5,apache tomcat and glashfish servers,MS office packages on that pc. Your ideas will be highly valuable for me. Thanks

To adress those people who think you have a 32 bit CPU- http://ark.intel.com/products/27461/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-521-supporting-HT-Technology-(1M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) There is a 2.8GHz P4 with 64 bit instructions, however, this CPU supports hyperthreading, which your system apparently does not (or you have it disabled in the BIOS). If your CPU is 32 bit, there is no possible way to run a 64 bit OS on it. It simply will not work. To address your actual question, the only reason I would run windows 7 on a machine that old is if you need to for program compatibility reasons. In that case, I would actually recommend using the 32 bit version of windows 7, since there is less memory overhead with 32 bit, and the main benefit of 64 bit is more memory address space, which you don't need with only 2GB of RAM. Windows 7 will run fine on that machine, (it will not affect hardware lifespan), but it will get worse performance that XP, and will use more disk space. You can also try upgrading to XP service pack 3 to see if you can get your workbench program to work. Like I said, windows 7 64 bit will work fine with your computer, it's just that the 64 bit version uses a little more RAM than the 32 bit version, and the main benefit of 64 bit is that you can address more than 4 GB or RAM, which is not applicable in this situation. However, if you already have the 64 bit version of windows 7 installed, you might as well leave it that way rather than go through the hassle of re-installing windows for a small benefit. Just for reference though, in a fresh install of XP, about 100MB of RAM are used on first startup, where as in windows 7 the OS uses at least 500-600MB of RAM, resticting the amount of RAM left for other programs That said, I have a laptop running windows 7 with a 2GHz CPU and 2GB DDR2, and it works fine for basic usage.

Thats only a 32 bit processor, why are you running Win 7 64 on it?

Win 7 would be highly strained on a pentium 4 machine and you should never run a 64bit OS on a 32bit processor. Your asking for trouble.

64-bit Windows 7 is overkill for that computer, and may be contributing to the lack of performance. I run Windows 7 Pro 32bit on an old Asus notebook with a 3GHz P4 CPU, 1GB RAM, and a 60GB ATA HDD. It performs as well (possibly even better) than Win XP Pro did. The Asus is at least 7 years old, currently out on loan to a customer.

This is what Microsoft recommends. I would say you you need a hardware upgrade.

Windows 7 will run slowly with aero effects turned off. It will not overload your hardware components, but loading software will take long time.
