What are different signs of recovery from parvo?

Aggression after long Parvo recovery?

  • Our 4 month old puppy broke with Parvo almost 3 weeks ago. It hit her very hard and she was sick with it for 10 days. After she recovered from the virus, she still was not completely well. She was drinking on her own but would not eat. We went back to the vet twice and he ran some tests and said she is anemic. She is on vitamins and a critical care A/D food. I have to syringe feed, although the past couple of days she has started to eat on her own. She is so sick of me messing with her. The first week was IV and sub q fluids plus syringe feeding liquids. Now I still have to do things she doesn't like even though the Parvo has passed. She is very friendly with my husband and son. She wags her tail and goes to them for attention. She is very aggravated with me. She growls and she has bitten me in my face three times while I have been trying to feed and give her meds. How do I correct these horrible feelings she has developed for me? What is the best way to correct her aggression and biting while she is still fragile in body and spirit? I don't want her to hate me, and more, I don't want her scared of me. Thanks

    This puppy has walked through the depths of Hell on earth. The fact she is even alive is a miracle. You do NOTHING to correct her right now. She is not healthy yet. You take steps to protect yourself, enlist the help of your husband and do what you have to do. When she is well? She should come right out of this behavior. PAIN and the feeling of NOT feeling good is obviously what is causing her to act like this towards you because you are the one she associates with the *pain*..... When my Dachshund was literally shredded by another dog and his right ear had to be cut away and completely reconstructed, I had to clean it twice a day, apply medicine etc. He was in horrific pain when I touched it. He is 9 years old and came very, very close to taking my face off several times. I enlisted some help. And now he is just fine.

I am glad to hear your dog is recovering ,Could your Husband not help out with the medication ,that would take the pressure off you. She is a 4 month old puppy so you need to correct this being bitten in the face is not good ,One of my dogs had a few months of very harsh vet treatment and never once tried to bite so you need to get some one else to Treat the dog .

!There is no reason for Ignorance !call a vet!

I have worked with many rescues & boiled hamburger & rice or boiled chicken & rice, is a mainstay. It is easily digested & provides high protein. Many dog would come in dehydrated & malnourished & these mixtures brought them back to health. It is easy on the tummy & most dogs love it. I think that all the messing with her is over & she can rest. Hand feed her & talk gentle, use a calm voice. I don't like these special diets Vets put dogs on. Most of the time the dog food company gives the a Vet a kick back on the food, so of course he will recommend it. You can give her tums for the calcium.
