How do you recover text messages?

IPhone 4 randomly lost all text messages, how do I recover them?

I went to go open a text message i got from the locked screen but when I opened it, my new messages weren't in the messages app but I still had my old ones. I closed the app thinking it needed to be reopened and when I did that the app crashed. When I finally go it to open all my text messages were gone. However, if i search a word from one of my texts in spotlight or the messages app they all show up, but I cant view them. So how do I get them back into the messages app. I don't want to restore itfrom last back up because I have numbers and things that I havent backed up in the last few days. I'm running the lastest version of iOS and I do not use iCloud. Any suggestions?
