Figure skating dress and makeup help?

  • So my music this year is from Black Swan, and I want a black swan style dress that has a "feathery" feel. My mom sparkles all my dresses with swarvoski crystals, I just need the dress without sparkles. The dress has to be under $150. Also, I want to do some makeup like in the movie, but a little less dramatic, so if you have any ideas? Maybe a smaller version of the tiara too? Post links please!

  • Answer:

As a skating judge, I am going to be quite honest - unless it's an EXTREMELY recognized piece of music, such as the main theme from Carmen or Les Mis, or something we hear 100 times a weekend, like Zorro and Titanic, or we are a music major in university; 9 times out of 10 we have no idea what your music is from. There are SO many sources for music nowadays, it can be really hard to tell where a specific piece of music is from. That being said, keep it simple - we don't want to look at feathers and tutus - if we did, we'd be judging dance competitions, not skating competitions. It's more about how you interpret the music you're skating to, rather than trying to jazz it up with fancy costumes and heavy makeup. Look neat, clean and professional - that will get you farther. Even better, put out an AMAZING program - clean, polished, finished and well-executed - that will get you far more points than a dress and makeup ever will.

If you get a tiara, make sure it's tiny, you don't want something huge on your head that can fall off. How about just a rhinestone headband (elasticized and secured with clips) instead? For a dress, what about this dress in black/steel? http://www.bradgriffies.com/1206.html My friend has it and it's really pretty, they put rhinestones in a grayish black color with multicolor sparkle (AB crystals) on it, it's gorgeous. Some people are opposed to using eBay, but I just ordered a new dress from this seller and they were really helpful, my friend also gets dresses from the seller and they're really well made. Here are some dresses I think would be good. Also, the seller will make the dress in different colors if asked. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CUSTOM-MADE-TO-FIT-BEAUTIFUL-GORGEOUS-ICE-SKATING-DRESS-/120912840147?pt=US_Youth_Athletic_Apparel&hash=item1c26f785d3 http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEAUTIFUL-FIGURE-ICE-SKATING-DRESS-CUSTOM-MADE-TO-FIT-/120913278043?pt=US_Youth_Athletic_Apparel&hash=item1c26fe345b (in black) http://www.ebay.com/itm/CUSTOM-MADE-TO-FIT-BEAUTIFUL-GORGEOUS-ICE-SKATING-DRESS-/150749188309?pt=US_Youth_Athletic_Apparel&hash=item23195a10d5 Just spend some time looking around online, there are tons of websites that sell skating dresses out there, it just takes time. For makeup, don't go crazy with black eyeshadow or anything. You don't need special makeup for a program, I do the same generic look with neutral colors all the time for skating competitions.
