How Do I Write A Short Story (700-1,300 words..)?

• I need to write either a short story, article, memoir, or poem about what being an American means to me. I have to write something that will reflect my beliefs and core values. I want to focus it on my family's story and how their struggle to come to this country made my life easier. I'm choosing the short stroy but I don't know how to start it and if its like a short version of an auto-biography or something.. please help ? c:

If it's really interesting, readers will want to know who's talking. You could think of it like an auto-biography but it focuses more on one specific event/conflict: your family's struggle to come to America.
