Where to go for free anonymous counseling?

Where can I go for rape counseling?

  • I was raped three times back in high school and my parents told me to forget about it. Now it's been a good few years, but I'm an adult and want counseling. The problem is, I don't know where to look or how to get it. I want to do group counseling or other kinds, I'm going to college now, is there a way to check what college campuses have? I'm concerned about going into a crisis center because I'm not currently in a bad relationship and my last attack was two years ago. I'm worried if I go into a crisis center I'll get rejected because I'm not currently in crisis. Where can I find counseling that helps victims of the aftermath? I guess that's what I'm really asking. Thank you and please be kind.

  • Answer:

I went ot the local YWCA and the County Victim's Resource Center - the phone numbers are in the telephone book under your government blue pages. The counseling, therapy, pamphlets and books, support groups, women's groups and education classes were great, confidential, and free of charge. You do not have to be in "crisis" to take advantage of these resources. You can become a member of the YWCA and help other victims and join activities against violence and abuse in your county and participate in the community (such as Domestic Violence Month; candle light vigil, poetry writing, etc) if you choose. You may not be able or ready to take legal action against your rapist(s) at this time, but you may want to in the future and if or when you want to, they have legal guidance and a legal advocate available. It's not a decision you need to make right away, or ever. There's no pressure. Very best of luck to you.

Many colleges and universities have counseling services available to students at a discounted rate. You may want to contact the Student Services Department to find out what is available at your particular college. Call the Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000. We have trained counselors available 24/7 that can provide you with support and referrals for counselors in your local area. Please take care of yourself and know that help is just a phone call away. You should first go to the police, it doesn't matter how long ago it was, they should be punished for what they did to you. You could go to your college reception and ask if they have a counsellor you can talk to, you dont have to tell them why. You could also go to your local GP, they will recomend a good counsellor. Your parents telling you to forget about it was probobly the worst thing they could of done, im not judging them because i don't know the full story, but what happened to you is really bad and its great you want to talk about it. Don't forget there is always help out there you just have to look hard enough.

Rape centers of America. They have an anonymous hotline and they have centers all over. You really sound like you need to talk to someone. Don't keep it in.

Several are shown in my previous answer about rape at http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110829024311AAJP4ea and Google: "counselling; rape victims; (your location)" but keep in mind that ordinary "talk therapy" may be unable to address the deeply seated emotional trauma related to memories of such event(s). See my previous answer about EMDR therapy at http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120505213254AAZbXh2 After EMDR therapy, discuss with your therapist the importance of SINCERE forgiveness, as a way of moving on with your life, otherwise you will still be holding onto those negative emotions, but you may well not be ready for this step for some time. Have you visited the college counsellor / psychologist? The college admissions office / Registrar should know.
