Why am I not getting any sound through my TV from computer?

Having trouble getting sound from my computer to my tv?

  • Im using my 42' samsung HD tv as a monitor for my recently purchased HP desktop. i got the video working fine but nothing i try for sound is working. ive tried an HDMI cable (the video doesnt even work with that), a vga cable (computer detects something is plugged in, but no sound comes out) and now im down to using a skimpy little headphone jack. the sound works, but its so silent its almost pointless. thanks in advance for the help

    A VGA cable is video only. Id does not have provision for an audio signal. Also, most computers don't place audio on their HDMI connections. So you have to use an extra audio cable. You take the signal from the headphone or line out jack and run it to the designated audio input. Note that there is usually a specific audio input jack for the VGA video connector. If you have, and use a HDMI cable, there is usually one HDMI input that has an associated set of audio input jacks. Make sure you use the proper set of jacks.

You have done the right thing here. Take the audio cable and run it into a mixer that will boost the signal. I use a little Mackie board which is used for small live sound or for recording. I also run that into my stereo. This way I can hook up my smart phone and listen to music I downloaded. It brings the signal output up that goes into the stereo by making it an active send. You can also use the EQ on the board. I tried the S cable but it didn't work. If your TV had fire-wire and the computer has it also it will be the best hookup option. Unfortunately most TV's do not have this option.
