  • is it worth it to go to a top rated BBA program? i have the opportunity to go to Ross at Umich, is this a really good opportunity? will this give me a good chance of getting a job in NYC? or is business school undergrad not worth it?

    A degree from the Ross School of business at the University of Michigan is certainly a plus. There are many U of M grads in the world of business that will appreciate that educational achievement and give you "points" for being a U of M grad. That being said, there is no guarantee that you will get a job in NYC though. The fact is that the field you are seeking to enter has undergone severe disruption. The killer combination of the EU debt crisis, U.S. debt downgrade and uncertain regulations (Dodd-Frank) roiled the markets, slowed the economy and forced Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and others to announce layoffs. A few weeks into 2012, HSBC and Bank of America, each are cutting at least 30,000 jobs around the world. All of the big names, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, UBS, Credit Suisse, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Nomura and assorted regional banks are collectively cutting thousands of positions, too. Just last week I saw where Bank of America announced laying off another 2,000 employees. What does that mean for you? It means there will be competition from candidates that have MBA's aa well as practical experience. Good luck and best wishes for your success.

I wouldn't worry about the top-rated program. Truthfully a degree is just a degree. The only real benefit to those top-rated schools are their connections with killer internships and jobs. Does that mean you can't get a job if you just get a business degree? No! As someone in business though, what will get you that killer job is a very creative, forward-thinking brain with a degree and great internship experience. That's it!
