Are IRS tax transcript and IRS tax return transcript the same?

  • I am having issues with my financial aid and there are asking me for the following: IRS Tax Transcript - Parent(s) IRS Tax Transcript-Stdnt/Spse I have NO idea what they are. My parents don't really know what it is either. I went to irs.gov and all they gave me was my parents IRS Tax Return Transcript. I am so confuse. Would anyone be so kindly enough to explain this to me? I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Answer:

No they are not the same thing! A simple transcript is what was reported to them...a tax return transcript is what you filed with them. This is a fairly common thing starting this year, and long overdue if you ask me. Before they would accept a copy of the tax return. Well, I can fill out a tax return but that doesn't mean it was filed with the IRS....simply meaning that isn't the truth. Playing the system...well they have finally caught on...now in certain circumstances they demand proof that is actually what was filed on the tax return sent to the IRS. What you need is a stamped transcript of the returns they requested. To get this copy you will need to go to a local IRS Service Center. Hope this helps.
